Why do chains fail? 

Chains can fail due to a variety of reasons, including:

  1. Lack of maintenance: Neglecting to clean, lubricate and adjust the chain regularly can cause it to wear and stretch more quickly, leading to premature failure.

  2. Overloading: Carrying heavy loads or regularly riding with a passenger can put additional stress on the chain, causing it to wear and stretch faster than normal.

  3. Misalignment: A misaligned chain can cause excessive wear on the sprockets and chain, leading to premature failure.

  4. Improper tension: A chain that is either too tight or too loose can cause excessive wear and damage to the chain and sprockets, leading to premature failure.

  5. Corrosion: Exposure to moisture and road salt can cause the chain to rust and corrode, weakening the metal and causing it to fail.

  6. Impact damage: Impact with debris or other objects can cause damage to the chain, leading to failure.

  7. Age and wear: Over time, all chains will wear and stretch, eventually reaching the end of their lifespan and requiring replacement.

Regular maintenance, proper tension, and alignment, as well as using high-quality lubricants, can help prolong the life of a motorcycle chain and reduce the risk of failure.

Chain Size

Many times the size of the chain will be stamped on the front sprocket, along with the number of teeth (for example, "420-12T"). You can also determine the chain size by measuring the thickness of the sprocket:

420 = .23" / 5.84mm with Roller Diameter = .3125"
428 = .27" / 6.76mm
520 = .23" / 5.84mm with Roller Diameter = .4"
530 = .30" / 7.81mm
